Assessment Center

The Assessment Center for County Directors was developed in the mid-1980's by OSU Extension. The center, based on research, evaluates managerial and leadership capabilities using individual and group simulations and exercises. It is continuously revised to reflect the organization’s context. All directors are expected to participate in the Assessment Center within their first year as director. It is an excellent opportunity to interact with other directors, gain insight about your own skills and receive individual feedback about strengths and areas for improvement.

Description

The County Director Assessment Center is a three-day experience that combines several important opportunities for personal learning related to the specific job responsibilities as County Director. The Assessment Center design includes:

  • Participation in 7 simulations based on 'real life' experiences of County Directors
  • Observation and rating by experienced Extension professionals as assessors of behaviors directly related to 15 dimensions of leadership and management
  • Individual feedback that will be used by the participant and their supervisor as a basis for increasing professional development in specific leadership and management functions
  • Leadership training specifically designed for County Directors

The target audience includes those who have assumed responsibilities as (or have a desire to become) a County or Unit Director. All County or Unit Directors are required to participate in the Assessment Center within the first 12 months of becoming a Director.

Dates

For questions or to express interest in attending, please contact your Regional Director or Graham Cochran, Leader, New Personnel Development.

Resource Guide

A Resource Guide was developed to provide developmental support and follow up for participants who have completed the Assessment Center experience. Individuals are encouraged to review their Assessment Center report and reflect upon their feedback session with their assessor. The resources included will hopefully assist in focusing on professional and personal growth opportunities.
Resources are organized by each of the 15 behavioral dimensions and include books, videos, audio recordings, and workbooks. Many of the resources can be found in the OSU Leadership Center and/or from your favorite bookseller.
